Glossary of terms

We are conscious that fire and rescue services use a lot of acronyms, and that these can be difficult for people outside the service to work with. Although we have tried to minimise their use, some do inevitably sneak through. To help, we have provided a glossary of terms. If there is a term you find on our website or in the business plan which you don't understand, please let us know

      • CAA - Comprehensive Area Assessment - a new tool which focuses on areas and the impact partners have on delivering outcomes for the public. It replaces CPA.
      • CBRN - Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear
      • CCS - Civil Contingencies Secretariat
      • CFO - Chief Fire Officer
      • CLG - Communities and Local Government - the government department responsible for fire and civil resilience.
      • CPA - Comprehensive Performance Assessment - an assessment of a organisation against key themes including corporate capacity, achievements and how it manages its business. it is being replaced by CAA from 2009.

      • DoT - Direction of travel - an assessment of how will an authority is improving, made on an annual basis by the Audit Commission

      • FRA - fire and rescue authority: the political body that oversees the work of a fire and rescue service
      • FRS - fire and rescue service: the body which delivers fire and rescue services to the public, on behalf of a FRA.

          • New Dimensions - a generic term used to refer a programme of preparation and planning to deal with the aftermath of major incidents such as building collapses and search and rescue
